"Folks do add to things," she agreed, because that was what folks did. Fred studied his face, sipping a bit more coffe while she did.
"Is that what's making his offer hard? That you do...like it when he touches you. That he says he wants to try, and you want more, and then...the spare room. Like the two feeling like they're not fitting together?"
Fred sighed.
"Sometimes people drift apart. The hard part to face is that the drifting never occurs at the same pace. Someone always pulls away first, walks slower or faster, and there's that moment you have to face them and see right there, in their eyes, that it happened. Maybe they've already done that, I don't know. That's the worst part to get through, that moment." She fidgeted with her straw a bit. "And you might not like this part? But there isn't any knowing. Know one really knows how to do this, for all the books that people write. There's no absolute knowing."
