Coffee with Fred

He wasn't accustomed to having coffee later with people he'd so thoroughly seduced, but then, she'd been nice to him before that and after that and didn't seem to be running away, ans she'd offered to let him talk and he'd already apparently told her about Warren, so that made her slightly safer to talk to than the redhead who he barely knew.

He called her and invited her for coffee. He arrived at Starbucks a little early, parking the bike, then fidgeting outside on the step while he waited for her. He lit up one of his clove cigarettes, moving away from the door to the ashtray a bit further down. People might have given him disapproving looks on his own account, but at least no one coughed pointedly at him.

He was still fidgety, but at least the nicotine helped a bit. And there would be coffee. Which might make him fidget more. But it would be good and she was a calming sort and he might not end up talking about Warren at all, really, even as VERY confusing as things were now.

He leaned against the wall and tried to make himself stop fidgeting, which got him looks from the Barbie clones who walked by, flashing him an inviting smile. Bike. Leather jacket. Sunglasses. Cigarette. Too pretty for words. It was what he used to get such creatures in his bed to give him what he needed, but he was too fixated on Warren to do more than just smile back at them with a nod.

Some things were instinctual.

He smiled. "That sounds like a nice use of the space."

"It's as close to perfect as most things get, I think."

"That's good. You should have things as near perfect as possible."

"If that's true Devin, I'm not any different than anyone else, not any different than you. It just means that you deserve the same thing."

Devin looked unsure about that.

She saw him struggling with the idea.

"Take it as this girls opinion then?"

He nodded slightly. "Okay."

She smiled again, and went back to playing with her straw.

He just watched her, quietly, with a small smile.

It wasn't that it was a bad silence, in fact it was a very easy one, but it was something Fred almost always pushed to fill.

"So...you mentioned the tour. You're leaving soon?"

"Not 'til September. We're going to New York for next week, though, and then I was going to try and book some gigs in Boston to tide me over."

"Sometime soon I'll have to make it up to New York, as close as it is," she observed. "Will finding gigs here be hard to do?"

She really didn't think he'd have a hard time, but then it was a topic Fred knew nothing about.

"Not too hard. I know a few club owners who are always happy to have me."

"That's good then." She thought about things for a new minutes more. "New York sounds special, to you. Is it?"

"We went a couple of weeks ago..." He smiled a little. "It was good."

Fred's smile grew a bit at that, and she was almost a little surprised at just how much she wanted him to be happy.

"...I'm glad."

"We went to dinner and the theatre--twice. Saw the sights. Did a show..." Kissed on the floor of the hotel room.

"I don't really know about the sights?" Still she was smiling, and her eyes founf his again. "But all the rest? And the trying...that can be really scary, and exciting, can't it?"

He nodded a little. "It really can be..."

Fred didn't even move.

"...and you're going to?"

"If he..still wants to. After he has time to think about it."

Fred bit back the words, he, will, and want to, because Devin didn't seem to be totally hearing them.

"Good," she nodded with conviction.

He smiled a little.

Fred finally laughed, happy at how the afternoon was going.

"...you really don't remember much of me stopping by do you?"

He flushed a little and shook his head. "No. Not really."
