Glass -- New York, Friday Night

They'd given them a park facing room, which was more than Devin had hoped for. He brushed his fingers over the cool glass of the doors, then stepped outside on the balcony, letting the sounds of the city wash over him. He took a sip of whiskey, smiling to himself as he watched the warm early evening light warm the buildings and the tops of the trees. It was warm and the air conditioner in the room kicked on in protest of the open door, but he just let it run, listening to the sounds of Warren in the room behind him.

Even now, the heat from their little game still lingered, flushing his cheeks. The whiskey in the glass was cool, but not cool enough. He was cursing himself that they only had one bed, but when he'd booked the gig, and the room, he hadn't expected Warren to be coming. He figured he'd be pursuing his other gig while here, but then the invitation spilled out and here they were. He wasn't coming down off a high. He'd slept a lot the last few days. He'd been eating. He wasn't fragile and out of it, and sharing that bed was likely to test his resolve to the limit, especially after the teasing.

He wasn't likely to sleep much.

But he didn't want to push Warren. The flirtation was delightful. The game moreso, but he was the one who wanted it to be more than just a game, not Warren. He had to remember that part and not push, no matter if that "later" teased at his memory. He slid fingers over glass and imagined briefly it was skin, then pushed those thoughts away. He could behave.

"Our reservation's at six." He called back over his shoulder, straightening even as he kept his gaze fixed on the people scurrying below, drinking in the life of the City. "We should probably leave by 530. It's just around the corner, less than half a mile. Walk or cab?"

Warren nodded slightly. And then, tenatively, offered it up.

"Mom used to act. In college, mostly, but I think she kind of wanted to try out the bigger theatre companies. Before she got married, before... well, everything."

"Did she?" Devin smiled at him. "I thought I recognized a kindred spirit." He wasn't sure if questions about what happened later were appropriate and didn't want to shift to something upsetting. "Do you know what plays she did?"

"No.." he smiled a little. "But she has scrapbooks, still. I mean, I don't remember, but I bet we could find out from the pictures." She wouldn't mind if he and Devin looked through them.

"That would be fun. We'll hunt for clues." Devin grinned at him.

Warren laughed. "We can do that. I wonder if she has old programs in there, too. That'd help."

"Immensely," Devin said with a laugh.

The waitress arrived with their dinners and flames to keep the cheese melted. Devin had a plate of potatoes, while Warren got cut up bread and apples. Another plate with sausages and swiss dried beef and mushrooms and other vegetables was brought by a second waitress.

"Anything else I can get you two right now?"

Devin shook his head. "Nothing for me, thank you."

"I'm all right, thanks," Warren murmured. Trying not to be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of fancy food and fondue and. Mm.

At least he did have some idea how to eat fondue. He was on his second bite when the thought occurred to him and he almost choked with laughter.

"Of course, I got the food en flambe."

Devin laughed. "Of course, though mine has a little flame, but yours is far more impressive. And rightly so."

Warren grinned at him.

"You don't mind so much that mine's bigger than yours?"

Devin smirked. "I have nothing I feel the need to prove."

"That's true," he acknowledged. Giving Devin a look that, he hoped, said he remembered seeing Devin naked.

Devin smiled a slow smile. "I'm glad we agree."

"Of course, you don't really have any knowledge with which to compare..." he added.

Studiously keeping his eyes on his food.

"True," Devin acknowledged, with a smile, eyes sharp and watching him, even as he poured cheese over his potatoes.

"Not that it would shake my confidence either way, you understand."

Warren didn't quite smirk. "I'm sure it wouldn't. You don't strike me as the type who has those sorts of insecurities."

Pause.

"You're far too creative."

Devin chuckled, leaning over to spear a piece of bread to dip in the fondue, then offering it to Warren.

"Oh, so very true. I do try to make use of all my god-given...gifts."

Warren nipped at it once before eating it as carefully as he could. Which was pretty careful. He managed.

"Mm-hmm."

A second piece of bread, though Devin took this one for himself, eyes staying on Warren's lips.

"But for empirical purposes..."

Warren was licking the crumbs and cheese off his lips, for once, not teasing.

"Mmm?"

Devin smiled a little, leaning back and nibbling at one of his potatoes.

"Research. Comparison."

"Mmm-hmm."

Warren swirled a piece of bread around the fondue.

"I didn't know you were a fan of the scientific method. Thorough research."

"I am always very thorough," Devin said sipping at his wine.

"Mm-hmm." Warren smiled a little, glancing around. "So I've noticed."

Devin chuckled. "I'm glad to see you've been paying attention, my young apprentice."

"Yes, My Master..." Warren made his best Darth Vader voice.
