Glass -- New York, Friday Night

They'd given them a park facing room, which was more than Devin had hoped for. He brushed his fingers over the cool glass of the doors, then stepped outside on the balcony, letting the sounds of the city wash over him. He took a sip of whiskey, smiling to himself as he watched the warm early evening light warm the buildings and the tops of the trees. It was warm and the air conditioner in the room kicked on in protest of the open door, but he just let it run, listening to the sounds of Warren in the room behind him.

Even now, the heat from their little game still lingered, flushing his cheeks. The whiskey in the glass was cool, but not cool enough. He was cursing himself that they only had one bed, but when he'd booked the gig, and the room, he hadn't expected Warren to be coming. He figured he'd be pursuing his other gig while here, but then the invitation spilled out and here they were. He wasn't coming down off a high. He'd slept a lot the last few days. He'd been eating. He wasn't fragile and out of it, and sharing that bed was likely to test his resolve to the limit, especially after the teasing.

He wasn't likely to sleep much.

But he didn't want to push Warren. The flirtation was delightful. The game moreso, but he was the one who wanted it to be more than just a game, not Warren. He had to remember that part and not push, no matter if that "later" teased at his memory. He slid fingers over glass and imagined briefly it was skin, then pushed those thoughts away. He could behave.

"Our reservation's at six." He called back over his shoulder, straightening even as he kept his gaze fixed on the people scurrying below, drinking in the life of the City. "We should probably leave by 530. It's just around the corner, less than half a mile. Walk or cab?"

"I thought so." Devin frowned. "I mean...he had a club foot. It couldn't have been a fair fight."

"If he ..." If he was drugged out of his mind it wouldn't have been a fair fight anyway. Warren didn't say that. "Why would anyone ... he needed help. Not that kind of help."

"Because his kind are bastards to each other. They..." He shook his head. "Maybe someone thought they could get his power, his creativity, by taking his head."

"Taking his..." Warren blinked. "What?"

Devin blinked a bit, looking at him. Had he not covered that part?

"Oh. He was...they call themselves Immortals. They die violently once, and they wake up and then they run about and try and cut off each other's head to take their power or some such nonsense. It's all rather barbaric."

"Well, I guess that explains why he could be Byron and Jim Morrison." He smiled a little. "No, you never told me. I just figured he was... I guess I didn't think about it much. I throw fire and you're..."

He shrugged.

"... Why the hell would they do that? I mean, apart from taking power. Aren't there people who just figure they have enough power and leave everyone else alone?"

"Something about a Game?" He was rather fuzzy on the details. "Like, one wins in the end and gets everybody's power and then possibly tries to rule the world, or retire to Tibet or something."

Devin nodded in agreement. "Yeah. Some of them get to be friends and don't kill each other? Byron had a teacher/friend type person who was pretty cool. He said he didn't believe in the game and he hadn't killed anyone in decades." Devin considered that for a minute. "Well, not taken their head."

"... So, he hadn't killed any immortals," Warren smiled wryly. "Well, at least there's that. It's still stupid, though. I mean, what's the point? I guess having everyone's power would be pretty cool, but. What's the point, other than that?"

"Everybody wants to rule the world?" Devin shrugged, puzzled.

He nodded to a park exit. "This is our turn to head to dinner."

Warren started humming a little of the song.

"Let's go, then," he smiled.

Devin headed that way, tugging Warren as they darted across the street, then settling back to a stroll.

"So, our appetizer choices apparently are fondue or raclette. There's an argument to be made that one should really try the raclette, seeing as it's not something you can get except by making it at home or at a Swiss restaurant, but fondue has it's appeal."

Warren followed, amused at the tugging, gently squeezing his hand as they made it across the street as if to reassure him that he wasn't going anywhere.

"You know, you're talking to a guy who spent most of the past four years in a kitchen. When I wasn't at school, anyway. I bet I could figure out how to make it at home."

"You have to have a special grill thing," Devin said with a grin. "Fondue's easier. You just throw in alcohol and spices and melt and dunk."

He squeezed back, though, not clinging, but not letting go.

"I'm sure I can find someone who has a special grill thing," Warren grinned back. "That's true, though. I think we even have a fondue pot somewhere in a closet."

"Really?" Devin grinned. "I always wanted one, but hotels seem to frown on cooking in the rooms. The raclette you serve over potatoes, though, so it generally gets my vote."

"You and your potatoes." But the grin he tossed Devin's way was fond. Maybe more so than it should have been.

Devin gave him a wry smile. "After the famine, my grandmother was apparently obsessed."

"Well, when you go so long without something, I guess you would get obsessed." Warren shrugged, smiling a little.

"I guess? It must have worn off on me." He nodded at the street they were crossing. "This is Broadway."

Because all the theatre marquees didn't make that obvious.

"So I see," Warren grinned.

Devin grinned a bit. "Well, yeah..."

The restaurant was just a little bit off of the street, with an awning over the door.

"And we're here."

The interior was pleasantly cool, the wood warm hues that lent it a soft golden glow in the late afternoon sun.

Warren looked around, by now more accustomed to the idea of acting like a rock star, all the grandioseness of the area and the pride of the city.

He took his cue from Devin as they went in, falling a half-step behind.

Devin gave his name to the smiling hostess who took them right to their seats.

Their waitress was there quickly as well, smiling. She had a cooler with ice in it and a bottle of wine.

"Welcome to Swizz. My names Marisa and I'll be your server tonight." She set the wine on the table, as well as two glasses. She glanced at Devin. "Would you like me to open the wine now?"
